Panchgaon: A Themed Restaurant Celebrating India's Rural Heritage

Devesh Pratyay's Design Transforms Urban Space into a Rural Indian Village

Panchgaon is a themed restaurant that seeks to recreate the festive atmosphere of rural Indian villages within an urban setting. The design draws inspiration from the intricately decorated entrances, doorways, and windows of rural homes, as well as the overall atmosphere of happiness and festivity that pervades these villages.

The restaurant's unique properties lie in its ability to transport visitors from the hustle and bustle of the city to the tranquil environment of a rural village. The choice of colours, art motifs, and hand-painted walls and murals contribute to the aura of happiness and festivity. Wall art, an intrinsic feature of rural homes, has been adopted to create a festive atmosphere.

The restaurant is built on a 2000 square meter site within a total land area of 65000 square meters. The design team, led by Devesh Pratyay and Pratyay Chakrabarti, has plans for further development of the site over the next year.

The design process involved extensive research into rural art and crafts. The team studied traditional homes in rural settings, selecting elements such as framed jaalis and windows to create a human scale. The ceiling features an intricate pattern of jute rope, inspired by ceilings in some villages.

The experience of the space begins at the main entrance, a large doorway adorned with rows of light bulbs in the form of an arch. The entrance hallway, sectioned for guest seating, leads to the main atrium, which features a light installation of 100 bamboo baskets. From the main atrium, the space is divided into two parts, leading to other seating zones of the restaurant.

In conclusion, Panchgaon is a testament to the power of design to transform spaces and create unique experiences. By drawing on the rich cultural heritage of rural India, Devesh Pratyay has created a space that is not only visually stunning but also deeply evocative of a sense of place and tradition.
